Protecting the Environment, the Silverlake Way
What does Silverlake do at its automotive recycling centre in Shedfield?
We recycle vehicles and re-use their parts to minimise their impact on the environment.

Recycling
We recover and process cars, vans and motorbikes that are at end-of-life or insurance write offs, carefully removing all the pollutants that are toxic for the environment. Then we recycle over 96% of the vehicle including metals, glass, plastics, batteries, wiring and rubber. We report to the Environment Agency and proudly exceed their yearly vehicle recycling targets. Recycling vehicles reduces the amount of waste going to landfill helping to protect the environment.
Salvage
Some of the vehicles we process are classified as roadworthy and we sell these on our salvage auction for re-use. Giving vehicles the opportunity for a longer life helps to offset their carbon footprint – the amount of carbon it has taken to manufacture and deliver them – and so protects the environment.
Reclaimed Parts
Where a vehicle is no longer road worthy, perhaps following a collision; but it has parts like wings and bumpers that are undamaged, we remove and quality grade these for re-use. These are called reclaimed parts and we supply them to insurers, bodyshops, garages, motorsports teams and the public. We sell our reclaimed parts, which can deliver savings of up to 70% on new parts, online and at our Shedfield site and we deliver them nationwide. Re-using reclaimed parts is better for the environment because it creates fewer carbon emissions than manufacturing new parts.
We have an area of our site dedicated to breakers; it’s called U-Pick-It. Customers come to remove parts for themselves for re-use. We update our stock of 300 breakers weekly helping to give our customers choice.
How do we reduce the impact of our business on the environment?
Our entire, 10-acre site is concreted so that none of the pollutants we deal with when recycling a vehicle seep into the ground. All of our drains have interceptors which filter fluids and capture particles. The drains are cleared and cleaned professionally regularly.
We use intelligent route planning systems to minimise our vehicle mileage and ensure our recovery trucks are transporting at full capacity.
We recycle all paper and cardboard for re-use as product packaging. We use LED sensor lighting to avoid wasting electricity and we have 50KW solar panels on our roof for renewable energy. We harvest rainwater to use in our toilets and vehicle cleaning facilities and to irrigate the areas of our site given over to natural habitat. We invested in a full ecological site survey to help us protect the habitat for animals and create areas for rare and protected species like bats, great crested newts and slow worms.
We have committed to reducing our carbon emissions by 42% by 2030 and we are looking at new ways to make even more carbon savings. We love smashing a business target and this one helps our planet.
