Busting the myths around reclaimed parts
Reclaimed parts are original equipment manufacturer parts retrieved from damaged or end-of-life vehicles. There are many benefits to reclaimed parts. They are less expensive for repairers and motorists – typically savings of up to 70% of RRP on new parts. They’re available now, unlike many new parts where huge delays lead to costly and inconveniently long repair times. They are environmentally friendly. The energy required to dismantle a reclaimed part is much less than the energy needed to produce new parts. Reclaimed parts can be supplied domestically across all the UK regions meaning the energy and pollution created by importing car parts can be drastically cut.
Silverlake is accredited to the VRA UK Standard for reclaimed parts, meaning our full-service parts are quality graded and warranty assured. Our customers have confidence in our reclaimed parts service which can include, as necessary, parts delivery by our in-house fleet of delivery vans, nation-wide.
We understand that some people still remain nervous about the use of reclaimed parts and as accredited vehicle recyclers, running an Authorised Treatment Facility monitored by the Environment Agency, we see it as part of our job to help to provide reassurance. Safety, quality, availability, reliability and life-span are all concerns that have historically been raised and so we have addressed these below.
Safety:
Reclaimed parts do not include those parts that are linked to the vehicle’s safety features. Typical reclaimed parts are doors, panels, wing mirrors, and mechanical engine parts. Reclaimed parts are rigorously tested, checked, and inspected to a high standard and come with additional reassurance when bought from vehicle recyclers like Silverlake, who are accredited to the VRA UK Standard.
Quality:
Reclaimed parts are original manufacturer parts and have the same functionality as new original parts. Under the VRA UK Standard, parts are inspected, tested and quality graded and when bought from Silverlake, come with a warranty.
Availability
Stocks of reclaimed parts have grown to match the pace of demand. Vehicle recyclers analyse demand data to ensure they dismantle, store and catalogue the parts the market most commonly requires. Silverlake is part of the e2e national network of vehicle recyclers and on top of its own warehouses holding circa 42,000 reclaimed parts, it can also access a further 5million parts available through the network. Silverlake also runs a dedicated delivery fleet for its reclaimed parts service, meaning parts can be delivered nation-wide.
Reliability and life-span:
When sourcing and fitting reclaimed parts, insurers and their collision repairers will look to use high quality, reliable parts that are the same age or younger than the car that is being repaired so that the overall condition and life-span of the car is uncompromised.
